About Biberach an der Riss

Tradition meets innovation in the heart of Upper Swabia

In Biberach an der Riß, in the heart of Upper Swabia, tradition is very important. The Schützenfest, the four large fairs, the Christkindlesmarkt and the ‘Christkindle ralassa’ are firm fixtures in Biberach's annual calendar.

Biberach combines a lively history with an optimistic view of the future. A stroll through the old town centre allows you to admire one of the most beautiful market squares in southern Germany. It is surrounded by magnificent patrician houses and the Gothic parish church of St. Martin, which has been baroquised on the inside and is well worth a visit. On the Weberberg, a characteristically historic neighbourhood where weavers once helped to create the town's wealth with their crafts, there are hidden corners, alleyways and traditional pubs - all of which create a homely atmosphere.

At the same time, Biberach is one of the strongest business centres in Germany. The town is just as popular with highly qualified specialists from Germany and abroad as it is with tradespeople, established companies and young entrepreneurs. And not without reason: in Biberach, a high quality of life for the people, a very good infrastructure and healthy economic growth go hand in hand. This is one of the reasons why Biberach's companies are among the international leaders, particularly in the fields of industry, crafts and research.

The Schützenfest in July is the highlight of the Biberach year. For ten days, the ‘Beavers’ celebrate their traditional festival, whose origins as a children's and local festival date back to the 17th century. It is called ‘schützelet’ in our town when the drummers and pipers prepare for the shooting festival. The historical procession is particularly splendid, bringing the town's history from the Staufer era to the Bismarck era to life. The over 200 magnificent carriages and riding horses are a special attraction.

Inseparably linked to the Schützenfest is the Schützentheater, the Biberacher Märchenspiele, Germany's traditional children's theatre. Biberach has also been home to the Dramatic Society, Germany's oldest ‘civic theatre society’, since 1686.

The Biberach Film Festival, which attracts thousands of visitors every year at the beginning of November, is also famous throughout Germany. At this important film festival of German cinema, visitors have the opportunity to experience directors, actors and screenwriters up close.

The town museum, which presents important collections in the fields of natural history, archaeology, history and art, deserves a special mention. Two special exhibitions with a regional focus are organised here every year.
