Biberach Museum

The museum with its four exhibition halls is one of the ten most notable municipal museums in Baden-Württemberg. One of the most amazing facts about Biberach is the almost countless number of artists with roots in this small town. The well-appointed municipal museum bears eloquent witness to this. Admission is free of charge on Saturday.

Major works of southern German art are presented here and include the most renowned German expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880 - 1938), Baroque paintings from Johann Heinrich Schönfeld (1609 - 1684) and captivating genre paintings from Johann Baptist Pflug (1785 - 1866).

Among the greats is Johann Melchior Dinglinger (1664 - 1731), legendary goldsmith of the German Baroque, who created world-famous treasures at the Dresden Court of Augustus the Strong. In Biberach, you can experience his jewelled flower basket.

The fully preserved artists' studios of Munich animal painters Anton Braith (1836-1905) and Christian Mali (1832-1906) are also unique and represent a venerable cultural landmark. The old German studios were moved from Munich to Biberach in 1906.

The natural and cultural history of Upper Swabia is presented in a colourful and engaging manner as the fossils of fish, sharks and mammoths take us back to a time many millions of years ago. Habitats that have been recreated with incredible attention to detail draw you into the native animal world. An officially listed archaeological collection reveals the life of reindeer hunters in the Stone Age, waterside dwellers in the Bronze Age, Celts, Romans and Alamanni. Staged scenes spanning 800 years of city life are also on display and depict the battles fought in the Middle Ages, infamous criminal Schwarzer Veri, the world wars and National Socialism.
